Daily Vocabulary: Monday, 10/13 – Pretentious: adj. – claiming or pretending increased importance; ostentatious (showing off) – Pretentious Patrick never goes anywhere without a copy of War and Peace under his arm, even though he’s never read a word of it. My neighbors are very pretentious. They plaster their windshields with the decals of posh prep schools, beach clubs, and Ivy League colleges.
Cliché noun: an idea or expression that has become stale due to overuse (trite) Good writers avoid clichés like the plague (very cliché). Lazy writers rely on clichés because it’s hard work to express ideas with fresh, new phrases.
