Romeo and Juliet Act I; scene ii – continue notes on characterization of Romeo and Light and Darkness
Purpose of scene iii Dramatic PurposeSummary of Act I scene 3 – here you should jot down some notes on Juliet, her mother and her nurse. Consider how the nurse and Lady Capulet serve as FOILs to each other (how they contrast each other).
Notes: Symbolic Archetypes: Light vs. Darkness – Light usually suggests hope, renewal, OR intellectual illumination; Darkness implies the unknown, ignorance, or despair.
Light v Darkness: Light versus Darkness is an eternal battle fought every day by every individual. The difference between right and wrong is an example. This archetype shows opposites, where light implies hope and intellectual illumination, and darkness shows despair and ignorance (The Dark Ages).
In scene iv we meet Mercutio, so add him to your list of characters and take notes as you get to know him better. Specifically consider how he serves as a FOIL to Romeo based on their opposing views of love and of dreams.
